Construction Work Zone Safety: Spatio-Temporal Analysis of Construction Work Zone Crashes

Analysis of work zone crashes can help identify the contributing factors and inform strategies to improve work zone safety. However, the work-zone-related crashes may not be correctly identified in Utah’s crash reports, which impedes work zone safety analysis. To overcome this major challenge, the research team will leverage available data sources (i.e., crash data, work zone information, vehicle probe data) to compile a comprehensive database of all the work-zone-related crashes (both primary and upstream). This will facilitate further safety analysis, such as testing the hypothesis that: "Work zones increase the number of crashes." However, to test such a hypothesis, we cannot simply look at the average number of crashes at road links with and without work zones, and then proceed with a statistical t-test. Instead, we must account for additional factors that may contribute to traffic crashes, such as traffic volumes at those locations, road geometry, weather, visibility, work zone information, and possibly others. Therefore, the team will extract the aforementioned information and try to account for their effects as well. The proposed research and resulting strategies are especially important given Utah Department of Transportation's (UDOT's) ongoing construction program and strategic goals of increasing mobility, reaching zero fatalities, and preserving infrastructure.
