Assessing the Effectiveness of Blue Lights on Work Zone Safety
In April 2019, House Bill 580, Mississippi’s “Blue Light Law” was officially signed into law. Implementation of blue lights in MS work zones is intended to help ensure the safety of workers and road users. However, at the current stage, limited information is available regarding the quantitative impacts of blue lights on work zone safety in MS. Even though some efforts have been made by other state DOTs (such as Massachusetts, Florida, Texas, and Minnesota DOT’s) on blue lights for work zone safety, the understandings of (i) the effective practices of implementing blue lights and (ii) the quantitative impacts of blue lights on driver behavior and traffic characteristics for work zone safety in MS are still limited. Understanding of the above-mentioned two aspects is expected to enable MDOT and other partners to implement blue lights in MS work zones more effectively and efficiently for safety management.
