Field Validation of Balanced Mix Design Initial Criteria
The purpose of this project is to validate the initial Balanced Mixed Design (BMD) test criteria determined from the laboratory testing of eleven 50-gyration surface mixes placed in 2015. Automated surface condition surveys will be performed to collect distress data. Cores will be collected for evaluation of asphalt content and gradation, mixture testing, and recovered binder properties. If needed, Falling Weight Deflectomoter (FWD) testing will be performed to assess structural condition. Analyses will be performed to evaluate the performance of the mixes over 8 years of service and to determine the appropriateness of the current BMD test thresholds This study is not intended to define new thresholds.
