HFST Review of Service Life
Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) began using High Friction Surface Treatments (HFSTs) in 2013. What begin as three initial placements has grown into a large program each year. While HFSTs can be an effective safety improvement they are costly and if applied incorrectly can begin to deteriorate quickly. This project will look at the large number of HFSTs currently in place over the years and see how long they are “holding up.” It should be noted that past research has shown that even when HFSTs appear to be in poor condition they often are still providing good friction values. Since HFST is strictly a safety improvement and not a maintenance treatment; the condition of the pavement prior to treatment is also important and will be reviewed as part of the project. It is anticipated this project will be looking at a visual survey of the condition mostly through ARAN video
