RES2022-02: Load Rating of Girder-Stringer-Floor Beam Bridges
This research will conduct a literature review of the current state-of-practice and emerging research; experimentally measure strain at various locations; conduct line girder analysis of continuous stringer spans using SIMON software and identifying potential sources of refined load ratings. Standard factors in modern software are overly conservative for these types of bridges; Appendix 6 of AASHTO Specifications is appropriate for stringers and results in significantly increased flexural resistance; The controlling K-factor for the load-tested bridge was found to be 1.68.
