Pedestrian Hit and Run Analysis
The objective of the Pedestrian Hit and Run Analysis project is to identify, assess, analyze, and synthesize current data and research on pedestrian hit-and-runs as well as identify research gaps so NHTSA can develop countermeasures to help reduce the number of hit-and-run crashes. Little research has explored characteristics of pedestrians killed in hit-and-run crashes. This analysis effort aims to explore pedestrian variables (e.g., demographics - sex, age, race and ethnicity, blood alcohol concentration (BAC), license status), corresponding environmental and roadway factors (e.g., time of day, day of week, lighting, crash location, posted speed, roadway functional class), and surrounding location characteristics (proxies for equity assessments - e.g., income data, race and ethnicity data, English proficiency, alcohol outlet density) that may be associated with hit-and-run crashes. As almost half of hit-and-run drivers are later identified, any information associated with drivers and their vehicles will also be explored. The analysis will compare pedestrian, environmental, and location characteristics of fatal pedestrian hit-and-run crashes and fatal pedestrian non-hit-and-run crashes to identify any significant differences. Determining differences is critical to developing effective countermeasures to reduce crashes.
