Veterans' Glass City Skyway Bridge Main Cable Evaluation

The main span of the Veterans' Glass City Skyway (VGCS) Bridge over the Maumee River is a cable stayed structure. The bridge has a single row of stay cables comprised of epoxy coated strand that are encased in stainless steel sheathing. Nondestructive inspection methods of these bridges are limited and can be expensive. This issue is compounded when the cables are encased in stainless steel sheathing like the VGCS. The ability to detect corrosion, pitting or other defects that can impact the cable is essential to ensure the safety of the traveling public and the longevity of the bridge. Currently, it is unclear if a technology is available that can obtain data to evaluate the condition of cables encased in stainless steel. Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) is unaware of any attempts to fully test existing methods to determine the viability and effectiveness of existing procedures. Research is needed to determine if current methods/technologies are capable of evaluating the condition of epoxy coated strands encased in stainless steel. The goal of this research is to determine a systematic method for monitoring and assessing the condition of the epoxy coated strands in the stay cables. The objective of this research is to identify a practical, nondestructive way to evaluate the condition of the epoxy coated strands in the stay cables using existing and available technologies. This research may provide ODOT with the ability to determine the condition of the stay cables on the VGCS. Answering the question of whether or not strands encased in stainless steel can be assessed or even seen through current methods is an essential first step to ensuring the soundness of these structures.
