Pilot Medical Incapacitation Event Data Pathways for Safety Assurance

Per Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Order VS 8000.367, the Office of Aerospace Medicine (AAM) is responsible for measuring and assessing the effectiveness of safety risk controls and identifying ineffective controls. AAM safety risk controls, as promulgated in the form of pilot medical certification standards, are designed to minimize the likelihood of pilot medical incapacitation to an acceptable level of safety. At present, the FAA does not have a systematic approach to tracking and managing pilot incapacitation events. The purpose of this project is to investigate and explore opportunities to standardize the approach used by part 121 operators to identify and report safety-related pilot incapacitation events to the FAA. The results of this project will be transitioned through the AAM Safety Council and shared with the FAA Aviation Safety (AVS) Safety Management System Coordinating Group.
