Cost Effectiveness Analyses in Updating Aerospace Medicine Risk Controls

In accordance with FAA Orders 8040.4 and 8000.367, the Office of Aerospace Medicine (AAM) is implementing a Safety Management System. AAM publishes guidance for pilot medical certification in One Guide. This guide contains condition-specific medical evaluation requirements including specialty evaluations, laboratory tests, imaging studies, and neurocognitive assessments, to support medical certification decision making. These evaluation requirements may result in significant out-of-pocket expense for a pilot. The purpose of this project is to develop a framework and methodology for analyzing the cost effectiveness of condition-specific medical evaluation requirements in the course of updating OneGuide through AAM’s Safety Risk Management (SRM) process. The results of this project will be incorporated into AAM’s SRM process as documented in the Aviation Safety (AVS) Quality Management System (QMS).
