Understanding and Improving Canadian Drivers’ Knowledge of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems
Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), such as Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), are increasingly available in vehicles on Canadian roads. Despite the increasing prevalence of these systems, Canadian drivers are not required to receive training on their safe operation. The overall objective of this project was to support appropriate trust in and reliance on these ADAS by improving drivers’ understanding of these systems. In on-going research efforts, it has been shown that North American (Canada and the United States) drivers have misconceptions of the limitations and capabilities of ACC and LKA. This research extends these efforts and seeks to understand Canadian drivers’ knowledge of ADAS, and to evaluate the efficacy of different training approaches to correct driver misconceptions.
