Synthesis of Information Related to Highway Practices. Topic 55-10. Implementation of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Proven Safety Countermeasures
State departments of transportation (DOTs) consider and implement various safety countermeasures on their transportation networks to improve transportation safety. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Office of Safety provides a list of and resources for 28 proven safety countermeasures (PSCs) and suggests their use for state DOTs and other agencies, as these PSCs have been shown through research to help reduce fatalities and serious injuries on the nation’s roadways (https://highways.dot.gov/safety/proven-safety-countermeasures). FHWA groups these PSCs into five categories: speed management, pedestrian/bicyclist, roadway departure, intersections, and crosscutting. As the number of FHWA PSCs has grown from nine to 28, there is a need for a greater understanding of DOTs’ practices for their use. This synthesis addressed the need for more knowledge regarding the practices of state DOTs for FHWA PSCs. The objective of the synthesis was to review and document state DOT practices regarding the implementation of the FHWA PSCs. Research is complete. The final report is published as Synthesis Report 639 and can be found here: https://doi.org/10.17226/28855
