Investigating Statewide Transit Maintenance Needs
Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) provides capital and operating funding to more than 50 public transit agencies statewide, including transit vehicles, maintenance/administrative facilities, and daily operations funding. This study shall investigate the efficiency of the current network of two Regional Maintenance Facilities, with an emphasis on how that network can be expanded and better utilized for agencies who are currently using public funding to outsource many of their vehicle maintenance needs at higher rates than could be spent at Regional Maintenance Facilities. This project’s goal is to document how transit providers across the state currently use the Regional Maintenance Facilities and recommend improvements to that network. Currently, bus maintenance outsourcing costs agencies a large amount. If expanding the network of Regional Maintenance Facilities could yield operational efficiencies, this could allow for shifting resources into hiring more operators to provide more frequent service in areas where it is warranted.
