Development of Deterioration Curves for Ohio Bridges

There are approximately 45,000 bridges in the State of Ohio. As a home rule state, the ownership and responsibility of maintaining these structures is shared between ODOT and local public agencies (LPAs) based on where the structure resides. Regardless of ownership, ODOT maintains a comprehensive database of all bridges in Ohio. This database, AssetWise, is a web-based application that includes inventory and appraisal (inspection) data that goes back for several decades. The availability of such an extensive data set presents an opportunity for bridge owners to gain insights into the historical performance of Ohio's bridges. Of particular interest is the rate of deterioration of various structure types located on both the local and state transportation systems. Developing deterioration curves for structure types utilized on Ohio's roads will help bridge owners have a better understanding of the projected performance and service life of these structures. The ability to then compare these curves at local, regional and statewide levels can further enhanced knowledge. The goal of this research is to enhance bridge owner's understanding of projected service life and performance of specific structure types. Findings from this research will enhance bridge owners understanding of the overall performance and general life expectancy of bridges based on specific structure type. Information learned from this research may be useful for planning purposes during the development of Capital Improvement Program plans, which can cover a period of 5 to 10-years. These results may be helpful when determining which type of structure should be considered for a specific location. It may also provide insight, at a high level, as to when a specific structure could be expected to begin to degrade or display signs of failure. This may help bridge owners be proactive in terms of planning for maintenance and replacement activities.
