Effect of Spacing on Axial Resistance of Auger Cast Pile Foundations

The main objective is to evaluate the effect of spacing on load-settlement behavior of auger cast piles through finite element analysis and numerical modeling, as well as with small-scale physical model testing. The following objectives will be accomplished using the above techniques: (i). Provide guidance on the effect of spacing of auger cast piles on load-deformation response as a function of bearing layer strength and foundation properties. (ii). Quantify the effect of overlapping stress bulbs among foundation elements and associated shear strains and stresses. (iii). Investigate the effect of soil layering (sand-rock, and sand-rock-sand-rock) on the load-settlement behavior of auger cast piles. (iv). Investigate the effect of rock strength and effect of design unit skin friction (demand). (v). Investigate the effect of pile diameter on the computed load deformation of the auger cast pile. (vi). Develop a limiting demand to capacity ratio of unit skin friction versus rock strength, beyond which either reduction factors are required, or the proposed spacing should not be allowed. (vii). Investigate relationships among geotechnical variables that influence the effect of spacing on the capacity of auger cast piles using numerical modeling approaches and validated with laboratory small-scale physical model tests. (viii). Development of correlations (formula or charts) for effect of spacing on axial capacity of auger cast piles that can be readily used in geotechnical practice in Florida.
