Toward AV Infrastructure Readiness: DOT Challenges and Solutions

State and local DOTs (also termed Infrastructure Owner Operators, IOOs), are facing increased pressure to provide and maintain highway infrastructure that is considered “AV-Ready”. To date, there is little guidance, beyond what the autonomous vehicle (AV) industry has provided, that demonstrates with clarity and consensus what AV readiness means regarding “hard” infrastructure (pavements, bridges, roadside) assets. Further, most information that exists has been provided from the AV technology manufacturers and/or the manufacturer’s perspective, and does not necessarily take the needs of DOTs/IOOs into account, or even demonstrate a solid understanding of how DOTs /IOOs perform construction, operation, and maintenance of their highway infrastructure. As has been demonstrated at recent national workshops with DOTs, research is needed to fill this information gap and give DOTs/IOOs a clearer understanding of what is involved with both near and long-term AV infrastructure readiness.
