Development of Cooperative Automation Capabilities for Transit
This project will be building upon the success of the CARMA program which has developed several tools to assist researchers in advancing cooperative driving automation strategies for new Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSMO) use cases. The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) developed a Strategic Transit Automation Research (STAR) Plan to advance the research, development, and deployment of transit bus automation. This project will support the STAR program and advance the 5 identified technology packages that cover 14 use cases representing a range of near-term and long-term concepts and automation levels. The concept-of-operations (ConOps) will consider these 14 use cases and other TSMO uses cases that will apply to transit operations and safety. These new transit use cases will be developed for Cooperative Driving Automation (CDA) and use the CARMA program tools for both simulation and future proof-of-concept testing.
