Cooperative Driving Automation Standards

The Cooperative Driving Automation Standards project is focused on development of ITS automation-focused voluntary technical standards needed to accommodate the evolving technological evolution and to assure efficient interoperable integration of automation with the highway and arterial transportation systems. The project will be conducted in appropriate cooperation with other standards organizations and in cooperation with the broader stakeholder community. This program builds on the successful publication of SAE J3216 Taxonomy and Definitions for Terms Related to Cooperative Driving Automation for On-Road Motor Vehicles and will develop new automation focused standards that meet needs identified during the creation of J3216. This PIF in FY2021 will fund the follow-on work from the FY2020 published SAE J3216 standard to address gaps and needs identified during development. These standards will likely define V2x messaging needs for cooperative automation as well as performance requirements for cooperative automation applications.
