Evaluate Performance of Sealers and Coatings Applied to TxDOT Bridge Substructures

The research team will perform a comprehensive evaluation of concrete sealers and coatings applied to bridge substructure in the state of Texas. The research team will investigate the need for and extent of surface preparation on both new and existing concrete surfaces including those with previously applied coatings. A focus is placed on material testing to evaluate the performance of coatings applied with various surface preparation methods and exposed to environmental conditions. The potential benefits are the development of recommendations for the level of surface preparation required for various sealer or coating systems and for the optimal coating type for Texas Department of Transportation's (TxDOT's) substructures with or without previously applied coatings.
