Human Factors Considerations for ADS-equipped Vehicle Fail Safe Strategies.
It is often suggested that when a driver does not respond to a take over request, that the vehicle comes to a "safe stop." However, stopping in free flow traffic might not be a safe (or the safest) option. The goal of this work is to carefully examine factors relating to risks of a vehicle response which consider the complexities of the dynamic driving task in a variety of environments (e.g., the number of lanes, traffic flow, vehicle capabilties, driver status).
