Development of a SMS Rollout Plan and Evaluation
Safety management systems (SMSs) let departments of transportation (DOTs) electronically report, manage, control, and audit issues related to employee safety. On matters of employee safety, their use helps safety and health divisions in DOTs become more agile, effective, and knowledgeable. Recently, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) purchased SMS software that has the potential to revolutionize data collection as well as the control and management of safety across the agency. But effective implementation of such a large and complex system needs documented procedures, processes, and plans. KTC will develop procedures for SMS use, assist in the rollout and marketing, evaluate the SMS as a whole and its output, analyze acquired data for additional insights and safety improvements, and evaluate how KYTC staff perceive the SMS.
