Training Manual for SDDOT’s LRFD Shallow Foundation Design Method

The SDDOT recently completed research project SD2014-11, which looked at reviewing and refining SDDOT’s current shallow foundation design method. The research proposed changes that would transition to Load Resistance Factor Design methodology, which is has become the state of practice nationally and is consistent with federal guidance for foundation design. To enable SDDOT staff to use the load and resistance factor design (LRFD) methodology, a training manual that describes and illustrates the method with step- by-step examples is needed. Objectives include the following: (1) Develop a training manual that guides the transition from current SDDOT shallow foundation design procedures to LRFD shallow foundation design procedures. (2) Provide a training session for current SDDOT staff and record it for use by future staff.
