I-64 Recycled Pavement Monitoring
VDOT has become a national leader in the use of pavement recycling techniques on higher traffic volume roadways. Despite these efforts, the use of pavement recycling is still considered experimental by many within the agency. Between 2017 and 2021, two recycled pavement sections were built on I-64 in the Hampton Roads District. These sections were built using full-depth reclamation (FDR) and cold central plant recycling (CCPR). During construction, instruments to measure pressure, strain, and temperature were included as a means to quantify the pavement response from traffic loading. The results of this study are expected to help resolve a general lack of information describing the performance of pavement sections built using pavement recycling techniques, especially in high traffic applications. This project looks to add to the body of knowledge by documenting the performance of these two recycled pavement sections. Performance data will include surface-based distresses as well as the results of periodic truck loading on instrumented pavement sections.
