Port Operations Digital Transformation

​The Institute for Transportation Research and Education (ITRE) at North Carolina State University in partnership with the College of Engineering and the Poole College of Management in support of the North Carolina State Ports Authority is seeking to work with existing data being generated by the N4 Terminal operating system at the Port of Wilmington. The port is seeking to expand their capacity and ability to position themselves for growth. The port has introduced a new operating system at its terminal, and are seeking support from the NC State and ITRE team to establish opportunities to leverage terminal data. For instance, the research team anticipates establishing opportunities to support the state’s strategic prioritization program (SPOT) and inform transportation planning and policies. This can be accomplished by merging data from the terminal operating system with other external data. Examples include merging data with IHS import data, third party carrier data, container destination data, and waybill rail data from the Service Transportation Board. The team hopes to generate insights that will support not only improved port operations, but external state policies and project prioritization as an objective third party.
