SPR-2313: Repair of Steel Beam/Girder Ends with Ultra High-Strength Concrete, Phase III: Implementation and Training

This project is proposed to enable the broad implementation of the repair method on different bridges with end corrosion problems. This entails devising a forming system that is adaptable to a large number of bridges and developing a simplified and automatized design process to enable rapid in-house designs. In addition to the improved forming and design processes, instrumentation of Bridge No. 03094 and Bridge No. 05844A will be provided to validate the structural performance of the repair and provide the knowledge necessary for future designs. To achieve these objectives, the UCONN team will work closely with the maintenance, design, and safety departments of the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT). As the objective is to promote widespread implementation of the repair, working closely with CTDOT to understand their concerns and incorporate their ideas is crucial to the success of the project. The tasks involved over the course of the project include to: (1) develop tools that can be used by CTDOT to quickly design repairs; (2) test an alternative shear connector for repair; (3) support the Bridge No. 03094 and Bridge No. 05844A repair designs; (4) conduct push-off tests on weathering steel beams; and, (5) instrument and monitor the Bridge No. 03094 and Bridge No. 05844A repairs.
