Entire Interior Culvert Lining with Engineered Cementitious Composites

The deterioration of corrugated steel culverts due to corrosion/abrasion is a significant problem in the state of Virginia. At the early stages of deterioration, limited damage to culverts may occur. However, at later stages, the culvert's structural integrity can be compromised. Application of an innovative spray-in-place culvert lining technique using Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECCs) shows potential to be a repair solution that would improve a deteriorating culvert's structural capacity. Relative to the state of the practice (i.e., culvert replacement or slip lining), employing ECC spray-in-place culvert repair techniques could potentially mitigate disruptions to the travelling/public and provide a more rapid and cost-effective repair solution. However, sprayable ECC mixtures developed to date are not highly practical, thus limiting their field implementation. The purpose of this study is to develop practical and cost-effective sprayable ECCs for the rehabilitation of culverts in the state of Virginia. The researchers will assess the fresh and hardened properties of ECCs and conduct a field test to evaluate the spray-in-place culvert repair technique using the newly developed composites.
