Developing Lower Modulus Polymer Resin Binder Systems Specifications for High Friction Surface Treatment on Asphalt Pavements in Nevada (NDOT 302-19-803)

High friction surface treatments (HFSTs) are thin applications of high quality, polish-resistant aggregates bonded to a pavement surface with a polymer resin, with the goal of increasing friction to decrease accidents. High modulus resins are typically used to resist traffic-induced stresses; however, the high stiffness of the binders, higher surface temperatures and temperature differentials may cause cracking, aggregate loss, and delamination to occur. Using lower modulus resins may be a solution to increase the stability and lifespan of HFSTs in Nevada. The ultimate objective is to develop specifications for polymer binder(s) suitable for use in HFSTs on asphalt pavements in Nevada. Such a binder would be expected to have lower tensile strength, higher tensile elongation, higher heat deflection temperature or glass transition temperature, better UV stability, and improved thermal compatibility with the underlying asphalt pavement. These improved binder properties should lead to increased service lives, thus improving the life cycle costs of the safety improvements. A detailed literature review on possible resins will be performed to screen a variety of polymer thermoset systems, followed by laboratory testing of potential resins that will work for Nevada. After candidate resins are identified, further laboratory testing of HFSTs with said resins, will be performed, and a final report documenting the scope of the research—and results—will be prepared. This research is aimed at producing specifications for appropriate materials (polymer resins) for use in HFSTs in Nevada. A detailed implementation plan will be included in the final report, with the goal that the revised specifications for the polymer resins can be adopted and incorporated in the standard specifications and deployed by Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT).
