Human-Augmented Technology Interaction (HATI) for Improving Construction Quality Control and Task Monitoring (NDOT 676-19-803)
Departments of transportation have a challenging task of monitoring construction activities for sites that may be at distant locations. It can take hours for individuals to travel from project to project to monitor and inspect specific project elements. This challenge is further exacerbated when considering the current workforce shortage in the construction domain, which often means individuals with less experience are needed to perform tasks that traditionally demanded more expertise. This research aims to leverage emerging Augmented Reality (AR) technology to enable less-experienced individuals onsite to have immersive virtual meetings with experienced professionals located in their offices. In this way, less-experienced individuals onsite can gain contextually relevant mentorship from current domain experts. Similarly, current experts are enabled to substantially broaden their impact within a given workday because they spend their time providing insights to numerous projects through AR rather than traveling to a small number of sites, thus leveraging their knowledge and maximizing their impact. In this way, the overarching aim of this project is to provide an AR-enabled method to allow the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) to more effectively deliver its projects by using the intellectual capital it already has within its many human resources.
