Injury Criteria for Obliquely Oriented Aircraft Seats

With the introduction of aircraft seats mounted obliquely to the aircraft centerline, it is important to ensure that occupants of obliquely oriented seats are afforded the same level of protection currently provided to occupants of conventional seats. This project will determine the injury mechanisms and human impact tolerance levels and methods of predicting occupant injuries in obliquely facing seats during a survivable crash. This includes evaluating the unique occupant kinematics and loading that could occur in impacts involving oblique seat installations. Tasks include identifying loading conditions that cannot be adequately assessed using existing forward or lateral injury criteria and determining the injury mechanisms and human impact tolerance levels and methods of predicting occupant injuries in obliquely facing seats during a survivable crash.
