Using Mycofiltration Treatment for Stormwater Management

Mycofiltration is a nascent stormwater management technology that utilizes mycelium or fungal webs as biological filters within organic matter and soil substrates. This low-cost and low-tech solution could be a beneficial addition to MassDOT’s typical Best Management Practices (BMPs) for stormwater management and improve water quality within transportation projects, such as sediment control barriers, bioswales, tree trenches, or compost slope blankets. Research is needed to define mycofiltration treatment design and operating parameters and ensure that mycofiltration systems meets the needs of MassDOT project types and personnel. The objective of this project is to complete and synthesize research into mycofiltration to inform best management practices for stormwater treatment design and operations and water quality improvement. Additional objectives include identifying research that can support water quality credit permitting and identifying the need for additional research such as field trials in conditions typical of MassDOT transportation projects. The project includes five primary research tasks. Task 1 is an initial investigation of mycofiltration through: (1) a comprehensive literature review, (2) personal interviews, (3) case studies, and (4) existing research data related to mycofiltration treatment design and operations. Task 2 identifies MassDOT project types for which mycofiltration systems could be appropriate and details implementation requirements for each type. Task 3 entails the drafting of construction specifications and typical details needed to implement the recommended mycofiltration systems. Task 4 develops a cost analysis of materials, installation, and operation and maintenance for mycofiltration systems, and identifies potential vendors of fungal inoculants. Task 5 compiles the results of Tasks1-4 into a Final Report and presentation that summarizes the findings.
