Measuring While Drilling in Florida Soils for Geotechnical Site Characterization

The objective of this research is to investigate the viability of developing Measuring While Drilling (MWD) practices for in situ soil assessment in support of conventional site characterization methods. This will require investigating multiple drill bit types to determine which bit type provides the best sensitivity for the delineation of various Florida soils and also provides an efficient drilling rate. Once the optimum drill bit has been selected, optimal drilling parameter ranges will be identified, and a standard drilling procedure will be developed. Next, various independent and compound drilling parameters will be investigated while maintaining the optimal parameter ranges to begin building an operational index in order to classify and assess various soil types. After the operational index has been developed, the effect of eccentric drill string rotation will need to be explored to quantify the effects, if any, on in situ strength assessment. Once the effects of eccentric rotation have been quantified, correlations will be developed between the measured drilling response and soil/ properties commonly used in the design of deep foundations.
