Analyzing Strategies to Improve Work Zone Safety

According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), fatal crashes in work zones have increased from 521 in 2010 to 762 in 2019 nationally. Due to the importance of work zone safety, states aim to develop guidelines to identify best strategies for setting work zone speed limits considering the safety of construction workers and drivers. This project aims to review the current literature on practices, reports, and manuals to outline existing safety technologies and approaches implemented in work zones by states. Furthermore, the impacts of several speed limit reduction strategies on enhancing safety and traffic operations in these areas will be investigated. The effectiveness of the proposed procedure and strategies can be determined by collecting speed and crash data from work zones which will allow for the development of a general framework to establish a work zone speed limit.
