Predicting Wireless Charging Revenues from Kansas Pavements

Maintaining and improving the roads in Kansas highly depends on the availability and distribution of the state highway finds. For a sustainable flow of highway funds, it is vital to find alternative sources of revenue. With a critical market share of electric vehicles (EVs) moving on the highways of Kansas, it is possible to have wireless charging pavements as a potential source of revenue. Wireless-charging pavements leverage induction charging by embedding primary and secondary coils in concrete pavements, and an EV can be charged on the move (as fast as 62 mph—the Qualcomm developed testbed) or being stationary. Installing wireless charging pavements will reduce the “range anxiety” of the EV owners and eventually increase the EV market share in the geographic region where wireless charging pavements are available for use. With a properly designed network of wireless charging pavements (only selected road segments should be installed with induction charging coils), Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) and/or KTA) can charge EV owners fees for wireless charging the vehicles and can generate revenue in a sustainable manner. Before investing in this potential revenue-generating technology, it is important to assess economic feasibility. Therefore, the research team proposes to conduct a cost- benefit analysis for wireless-charging pavement technology for Kansas.
