A Multimodal Analysis of Proven Safety Countermeasures in Kansas

Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) is developing recommended interventions to improve multimodal safety. While these interventions have seen successful in other states, they have not been vetted in a structured manner within different Kansas communities. This project seeks to conduct careful before and after analyses of a select set of multimodal safety interventions that will be implemented over the coming year. For example, Junction City recently introduced bulb outs to narrow a roadway and facilitate pedestrian crossing. This research would closely monitor all road user behaviors and compliance at this site before and after the intervention to provide measured guidance on how Kansan travelers respond and adapt to new multimodal safety infrastructure. The goal of this work is to collect data within Kansas and provide analyses that supports KDOT programs and projects by offering guidance for appropriate application of proven safety countermeasures.
