Development of Design Guidance for Smart Work Zone Systems
Smart work zone systems are designed to predict travel time, delay, or speed in a freeway work zone, to implement traffic management strategies, and to enforce regulatory rules. These systems can be used to provide real-time information to motorists during incidents, temporary closures, or any unexpected conditions on the freeway. The goal of this research project is to develop a guidance document for the design of smart work zone systems that can be incorporated into Illinois Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Design and Environment Manual. The objectives of the proposed research are to (1) conduct a literature review on smart work zone systems, including their deployment on varying types of projects, function, equipment, and components; (2) conduct a survey of other state departments of transportation to gather and analyze their experiences in utilizing various designs of smart work zone systems; (3) develop a smart work zone feasibility assessment tool to determine the need for deploying smart work zone systems for different types of freeway projects; and (4) develop guidance for the design of freeway smart work zone systems.
