Piloting Smart Work Zone Technologies to Provide Real-Time Lane Closure Information to Improve Oregon Highway Safety and Mobility

The research goal of piloting the use of smart work zone technologies to obtain real-time work zone lane closure information will be obtained by pursuing the following specific objectives: (1) pilot the selected smart work zone technologies to identify and recommend newODOT policies and standards, (2) demonstrate methods to provide real-time, accurate work zone data to ODOT’s TripCheck.com traveler information website, (3) demonstrate methods to provide high-fidelity real time work-zone lane closure data to the ODOT project of automated over-dimension permitting system, and (4) demonstrate methods to provide real time lane impacted data via ODOT’s work zone data exchange compliant data feed. The proposed research will be beneficial to ODOT and help demonstrate how Oregon is meeting the needs of emerging technology users that increasingly rely on technology to safely navigate highway work zones. The research will also provide real-time accurate work zone information to ODOT and benefit travelers using navigation systems on smartphones. According to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), there were 25,000 injury-involved crashes and 720 fatal crashes in 2017 in highway work zones. The proposed research aims to help reduce the risk of crashes in work zones. Without the proposed research, the safety benefit of future connected and even automated vehicles cannot be fully realized. Work zones also cause significant congestion and traveler delay. The proposed research helps reduce congestion and delay by providing reliable accurate work zone information. This information is beneficial to all drivers and especially needed by truck drivers to deliver goods efficiently.
