Removing Residual Lane Markings to Reduce Driver Confusion – Best Practice

This research will quantitatively determine which of several pavement marking removal strategies result in the highest level of driver comprehension and compliance with longitudinal pavement markings (e.g., lane lines). This project will help decision makers and engineers at Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) tasked with pavement marking removals select the most effective approach within available project budgets. Solving this transportation issue will improve driver safety and anticipate incorporating the finding into ODOT policy and procedures which will provide a safer and more reliable multimodal transportation system that connects people and helps Oregon's communities and economy thrive. The agency is becoming increasingly required to remove lane striping for the purpose of reconfiguring roadway cross sections on either a permanent (e.g., roadway reconfiguration) or temporary (e.g., construction or maintenance work zone) basis. Due to resource limitations, repaving and restriping is not always practically possible. In these situations, better pavement marking removal techniques will result in reduced driver confusion and increased safety at these locations.
