Synthesis of Information Related to Airport Practices. Topic S10-19. Airport Landside Data, Collection, and Application

Understanding the passenger journey without data can mean relying on intuition or responding to problems and complaints as they are revealed by customers. Monitoring performance by collecting and interpreting data can proactively detect change and measure the effectiveness of responses to change. Understanding and improving the airport customer experience requires understanding the "who, what, when, where and how" of landside travel. A significant source of understanding can be the data collected and its interpretation. A synthesis of how airports gather data and use data to improve service will be a valuable resource for all airport operators. This report would not include short- and long-term parking, but may include curbside, cell lot, and other customer / transportation service provider staging areas. The objective of this research is to document landside data, collection methods, analysis and interpretation, and its application in decision-making at airports. For this synthesis, landside is the portion of the airport between the airport entrance or access points to boarding gates. The audience for this research is airport staff responsible for making decisions about planning, design, customer experience, and day-to-day operations.
