Measurement and Prediction of Transit System Performance Using Probe Data Generated through DSRC and non-DSRC Technologies
Rapidly emerging information and communication technologies present effective means to measure current transit system performances. There is a need to develop software and protocols to collect and analyze the transit data generated by these new technologies to ensure the benefits of these infrastructure investments are realized for the public. This project attempts to convert the location data provided by transit vehicles into useful performance measures to guide transit agencies and state regulators in the planning and evaluation of public transportation. Specifically, this project will identify the probe data to be transmitted, specify the transmission protocols, structure the collection of those data, integrate those data with relevant general transit feed specification (GTFS) data, determine the fundamental metrics to be calculated to analyze and report performance, create the code to generate an easy to use “dashboard” to readily assess transit performance through these metrics, and finally incorporate sufficient details to understand the impacts. The project will yield straightforward methods and computer code for transit agencies to readily convert their location feeds into valuable knowledge about their systems, by creating a standardized set of procedures to collect, analyze, and display the data generated by on-vehicle communication technologies. The targets are doubling of transit, reduction of statewide per capita vehicle miles traveled, greenhouse gasses, and particulate matter emissions.
