Performance of Prestressed Bridge Girders Subjected to Vehicle Impacts

There are 614,387 bridges in the US. The majority of those bridges were constructed using prestressed concrete systems. These bridges are subjected to different natural and manmade hazards. Among those hazards, vessel and vehicle collisions are the 2nd highest cause for bridge collapse. This proposal aims to investigate the effects of vehicle impact on prestressed bridge girders. High fidelity finite element models of prestressed bridge girders will be developed. The models will be validated against experimental work from literature. The validated models will be used to investigate the effects of over-height vehicle impact on bridge girders. The girders will be subjected to vehicles having different details including vehicle speeds. The girders will have different construction details including the number of prestressed tendons and reinforcement. Once the girders were subjected to vehicle impacts, the damage will be determined and the reduction in the bending capacity of the girders will be determined.
