Utilization of UAV Usage for KYTC Operations

Recent technological advancements allow for the deployment of different remote sensing devices on Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS). UAS aid in highway planning, design, construction, maintenance, and operations. Data products generated by these systems range from simple (e.g., photo or video) to complex (e.g., classified point cloud, digital elevation models). They are less expensive to operate than manned aircraft and more efficient than traditional ground-based survey methods. UAS can facilitate more efficient project delivery by acquiring data for 3D design plans, reducing construction costs by letting field engineers measure progress and visualize problems before costly change orders become necessary, and improving safety by reducing worker exposure to moving traffic and hazardous terrain. Some remote sensing technologies, such as infrared and Lidar, may also be used on a UAS to assist with bridge inspections and landslide assessments.
