Impact of the New Context Functional Classifications
Transportation agencies are adopting a new context classification system that offers better indicators of mobility and access while considering modes of travel and users. The expanded system was introduced in AASHTO’s Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets 7th Edition (Green Book) and will guide design through the upcoming 8th Edition. Context classification helps agencies plan and design context-adapted roadways that accommodate a wide range of users. All aspects of project development at KYTC will be affected as it implements context classification. This project will document the impacts of context classification on the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet practices and recommend KYTC-specific uses for the new classifications.
