Statewide Overall Carbon Fiber Composite Cable Bridge Monitoring

Carbon Fiber Composite Cable (CFCC), and other Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) materials are being used for prestressing applications in Michigan bridge rehabilitation and replacement projects. As this is still considered an innovative material, understanding and quantification of the long-term behavior based on stress/strain gage readings of previous field deployments is essential for future design and construction considerations. Continued monitoring of the CFCC elements in already constructed bridges will provide information on the long-term behavior and allow for recommendations to be made for future designs, considering the behavior of current field deployments. Monitoring is proposed for the following structures until the year 2020: Bridge Street Bridge over the Rouge River, Southfield, MI: This bridge is a prestressed double-T beam structure containing CFCC longitudinal prestressing, transverse and longitudinal posttensioning, beam mild reinforcement, and deck and barrier reinforcement. This structure was constructed in 1999 and included gages (strain gages on CFCC strands, load cells for post tensioning strands, and deflection gages on select beams) and data collection equipment that was transmitting data until 2010. Pembroke Avenue over M-39, Detroit, MI This bridge is a prestressed side-by-side box beam structure, containing CFCC transverse post tensioning and deck reinforcement. This structure was constructed in 2011 and included gages (strain gages on the deck reinforcement, load cells for the post tensioning strands and deflection gages on select beams) and data collection equipment that has been transmitting date since 2011. The construction contract included a 5-year monitoring period, which will expire in 2015, upon which time this project will resume the data collection. M-50 over NSRR, Jackson, MI This bridge is a prestressed side-by-side box beam structure containing CFCC transverse post tensioning. The structure was constructed in 2012 and included load cells on the transverse post tensioning strands. The data is manually downloaded by MDOT staff on a regular basis. M-102 over Plum Creek, Detroit, MI This bridge is a prestressed spread box beam structure, containing CFCC prestressing strands, beam mild reinforcement, and deck reinforcement. The structure is currently under construction, with an anticipated completion date of December 2013. Strain gages will be installed on select prestressing strands and deck reinforcement bars, along with deflection gages on select beams. Upon completion of the bridge, data collection will begin. I-75 – SB – To increase the quality of the data collection project management decided to add the I-75 bridge to the collective group. Cost increase is due to the addition of I-75 SB over Sexton-Killfoil Drain, which is the longest CFCC prestressed bridge built to date. This is the longest CFCC prestressed bridge built to date and monitoring of this bridge will provide valuable data points. FY 2019 Contract Modifications: The budget is increasing due to costs for unexpected repairs causing failures in bridge monitoring. These operational repairs are needed to meet the goals and stated objectives of the project. Repairs are anticipated to be completed by April 30, 2019. Continue monitoring for an additional 5 years.
