Utility of Capillary Blood for Gene Expression Studies
Venous blood draws are the most commonly used blood sample source for molecular analyses, providing an ample supply of blood for use in downstream analyses and a wide range of blood collection devices with additive treatments to suit any blood collection purpose, including tubes intended to preserve whole blood RNA. Venous blood collection also requires specialized equipment and expertise in order to perform successful venipuncture, carries a risk of injury, and cannot be reliably performed by laypersons. Capillary blood collection by fingerstick is a simple and rapid alternative to venipuncture that can be performed with minimal training and can be performed individually in at-home or other settings. This study will determine if capillary blood collected by fingerstick produces RNA sufficient in quantity and quality as an input material for RNA sequencing, will compare the RNAseq results obtained from capillary blood to that of venous blood collected in RNA preservative tubes, will determine whether differential gene expression between male and female subjects is detectable, and will further probe for differential gene expression between the location of capillary blood collection.
