Develop Standards for Temporary Concrete Median Barrier in Flood-Prone Areas

In this project, researchers will assess cross-highway water flow requirements during severe weather events required to prevent significant rise in flood water by the highway median barrier and determine size and spacing of temporary concrete median barrier openings required to accommodate desired water flow. The research team will design and analyze a temporary concrete median barrier that will both meet the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware (MASH) standard, permit passage of water through the barrier, and consider the use of the barrier openings as small animal crossings in areas where animal impacts are common. Texas Transportation Institute (TTI) will perform full-scale crash testing to verify compliance with MASH Test Level 3. In addition, the researchers will investigate buoyancy and mobility of the free-standing barriers during hydraulic testing by instrumenting the barriers to measure the flow and will develop a comprehensive assessment of the lateral forces acting on the barrier during flooding events. Researchers will compare the newly proposed and existing barriers in terms of predicting tendency to slide. The researchers will produce a research report documenting the findings of the research, including design details of the barrier system sufficient for development of new standard detail sheets.
