Develop and Validate Precast Column Solutions for Texas Bridges

Prefabrication of bridge substructures can accelerate construction, may reduce lane or road closure times, and improve safety in construction. Texas has used precast deck panels and pretensioned girders for decades. Standard details have recently been developed and implemented for precast bent cap to column connections alongside the increasing use of precast bent caps; however, the use of precast columns has been very limited as compared to bent caps. The limited use can be attributed to a lack of standard details and experimental substantiation of precast column designs for Texas bridges. The research team will develop and validate practical standard designs and connection details for precast concrete columns. Researchers will focus on the development and validation of cost-effective precast concrete column solutions for Texas bridges that will be compatible with typical bridge designs and existing precast bent cap solutions. The Center for Transportation Research (CTR) will conduct large-scale laboratory tests to evaluate the constructability and structural performance of the proposed precast column designs and details considering typical loading conditions in Texas bridges. The final deliverable will be a research report documenting the findings of the research, including design recommendations and standard details for cost-effective precast column systems for Texas bridges.
