Strength and Serviceability of Damaged Steel Girders
The objective of this research is to develop fundamental understanding of damage in steel bridge girders due to vehicle strikes and to translate that knowledge into a framework for structural inspection, assessment, and decision-making. Recommendations for evaluation of damaged steel bridge girders will inform revised load ratings and other necessary safety and operational responses. These advances will enhance the confidence in decision-making for actions required after a bridge strike. When damaged girders that are still functional can remain in service with only minor repairs instead of being replaced, sustainability and life-cycle costs are improved and any negative impact on motorists is reduced.
