Combined Behavioral/Engineering Approach to Preventing Highway Fatalities

The goal of Kentucky’s new Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP) is to prevent over 200 highway fatalities per year by 2024. Applying traditional, single-discipline approaches is not likely to produce this reduction. This project will investigate the potential of enhancing and/or combining engineering solutions with behavioral strategies (education/enforcement). The project’s first year will work toward development of a methodology. The second phase will pilot and test the methodology for Kentucky highway locations. Consideration will be given to specific geographic, temporal, and/or functional areas of the Kentucky highway system.
