Impact of Pavement Friction on Traffic Safety, Phase 1:Pavement Friction Evaluation

The primary objectives of the proposed study are listed below: (1) To identify the possible procedures and a list of candidate continuous friction measurement equipment (CFME) technologies to evaluate pavement friction at different test speeds and operational conditions. (2) To assess the feasibility and possible benefits from the list of candidate CFME technologies to be used in Iowa based on their cost, accuracy, and applicability to the intended evaluation outcomes. (3) To perform an initial evaluation of the most feasible CFME technology(ies) in concert with the low wind speed technology (LWST) currently available at Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT). (4) To provide guidance and recommend the technology(ies) to be used for friction evaluation on different components of the network including curve and low speed segments. (5) Define a consistent procedure for both routine pavement friction evaluation at the network level and spot investigation for high risk areas.
