RES2020-22: Engineering design procedures and standard drawings for highway construction sediment basins
Stormwater discharges from construction activities are permitted by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) and must be controlled to meet permit requirements. Sediment basins are one of the many EPSC devices in the TDOT Drainage Design Manual to control and treat eroded sediment from highway construction sites; however, TDOT needs better design guidance on sizing the sediment basins based on site area, slope, and soil types. In addition, limited published data exists on the performance of sediment basins, and no on-site field data are available for basins with skimmer dewatering devices (e.g., Faircloth device). A critical research need is to improve the design criteria for sizing basins to construct them cost effectively and maximize sediment reductions meeting water quality/environmental standards. And an outcome of the Phase IIa research, better design guidance is needed on basin site selection at highway construction project sites that have limited right-of-way in linear corridors, and may encounter other factors such as groundwater and off-site drainage diversion into the project area.
