Use of Larger Diameter Shear Studs for Composite Steel Bridges
Efficient steel bridge girder design makes use of composite action between the concrete bridge deck and the steel girders. Shear studs welded to the girder top flange provide the critical link between the deck and girders. Satisfying AASHTO fatigue requirements normally leads to a very large number of shear studs, which makes placing partial-depth precast panels extremely difficult and results in a safety hazard for workers during erection or early construction stages. Using larger-diameter shear studs will significantly reduce the number of studs required on composite steel girders. This project focuses on the feasibility of using shear stud diameters greater than 7/8 inch for composite steel bridge construction, and the development of design guidelines for evaluating the static and fatigue strength of larger diameter shear studs. The research team will perform: (1) laboratory testing using push-out or similar specimens to obtain data to evaluate both the static strength and fatigue strength of larger diameter shear studs. (2) large-scale composite beam tests and associated computational studies to provide an evaluation of the performance of composite steel bridge girders with larger diameter shear studs.
